John C. Davies

John C. Davies, a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2015. He was 85.

John was the son of the late E. John and Dorothy A. Davies, of Philadelphia, Pa. He raised his family in Bryn Mawr, PA, and retired to Willow Valley Communities in 1995.

John is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Esther M. (Dengler) Davies (Lancaster), two sons: John C. Davies II (Lee Ann), Willow Street, and Scott R. Davies (Laura), Allentown, and grandchildren: Kaitlin, Grace, Alyssa, Andrew, and Aaron.  He was predeceased  by a son, Keith A. Davies.

He graduated from Northeast High School, Philadelphia, in 1947, completed a B.S. in Wood Utilization and M.S. in Forestry at Penn State University. He served two years active duty in the U.S.Air Force and retired as a Captain from the Reserve. John began his career with Roddis Plywood Corp. He later joined the Mell Lumber Company, which, in time, he purchased and renamed the Mell-Davies Lumber Co., Inc.

John was a member of Grandview United Methodist Church, Lancaster. Throughout his life, he was active in his church, especially Ardmore United Methodist.  He also volunteered with the Suburban YMCA, Ardmore, and the Boy Scouts of America. He served 22 years on the Board of Trustees at Methodist Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa.

John was an avid woodworker and also enjoyed the violin and travel.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a  memorial service at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 11, 2015, in the Orr Auditorium of Willow Valley Manor, 211 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster PA. The family will greet friends immediately following the service.
