John G. Ruhl

John G. Ruhl, 89 of Landisvillepassed peacefully on August 5, 2012 at Hospice and Community Care in Mt. Joy.

John was the devoted husband to OpalL. (Leonard) Ruhl for 68 years.

Born in Penryn in 1923, he was theoldest child of the late Henry E. and Mabel S. (Geib) Ruhl.

In 1941 John was drafted into the ArmyAir Corps and sent to Coronaca Army Airfield in Greenwood SC, where he met thelove of his life, Opal Leonard. Theymarried in 1944 and when the war ended they moved to Landisville where Johnworked for J.U. Baker trucking for 40 years.

An avid sports fan, John helped startthe Hempfield Youth Association (HYA) in Landisville during the late 1950’s, inwhich he served for over 30 years. Healso enjoyed taking busloads of little Leaguers, families and friends toPhillies baseball games. In the 1980’she was honored for his service to the community with recognition as a PaulHarris Fellow.

Surviving besides his wife are abrother Ira of Middletown, sister, Miriam of Elizabethtown, and brother Marlinand wife Betty of Manheim.

John will be greatly missed by histhree children: John L. of Marlton, NJ,Gloria M., wife of Gil Gilpatrick of Charleston, SC, and Robin R., husband ofJodi of Landisville.

He leaves a great legacy of twelvegrandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Family will receive friends at GraceBaptist Church, 1899 Marietta Ave, Rohrerstown, PA on Thursday, August 9thstarting at 10:00 am, followed by the funeral service in the church sanctuarystarting promptly at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow the service at the Landisville Mennonite Cemetery.
