John L. Herr, 81, of Lancaster, died Tuesday, March 13, 2012 following a lengthy illness.
Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Landis H. and Marion Glackin Herr.
Mr. Herr retired after 30 years as a mathematics teacher at Reynolds Junior High School. He also served as the Jr. Hi-Y advisor and head wrestling coach.
He was a graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School and the Millersville State Teachers College. He did graduate work at Temple University, the University of Maine and College of the Holy Cross.
John was a Track and Field Official for more than 40 years. In 1970 he received the Dr. Wesley Gadd award from the Lancaster Officials Club. He also officiated swimming, softball and wrestling over the years.
John was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as Head Usher, Church School Secretary, member of the Administrative Board and the Worship Commission. He enjoyed doing extensive traveling and reading.
He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War serving with the 9th Regiment Second Infantry Division.
His Masonic memberships included the Lamberton Lodge #476 F.&A.M., Past High Priest Royal Arch Chapter #43, Past Commander Knights Templar #13, Goodwin Council #19, York Rite College #11, Keystone Free Mauer Mark Lodge #400, Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, Harrisburg Consistory, Rajah Temple, Lancaster County Shrine Club and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Forest #27. He was also involved with the Pennsylvania State Education Association, PASR, the Board of Directors of Lancaster Teachers Credit Union, last secretary of the Lancaster Exchange Club, American Legion Post 1463, V.F.W. Post 1463, Lancaster Chapter of Track and Field Officials and the Commercial Travelers.
Surviving are two brothers, Thomas G. Herr of Baltimore, and James R. husband of Maureen Herr of Lititz, two sisters, Barbara J. Herr and Margaret E. Herr both of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by brothers, David L. Herr, Robert L. Herr and Joseph F. Herr.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster, PA with the Rev. William Lentz, Jr. officiating. Friends may call at the Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, 141 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. and at the church on Saturday from 9:00 A.M. until the time of the service. A Masonic Service will be conducted by the Lamberton Lodge #476 F.&A.M. at the funeral home on Friday evening at 7:45 P.M. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Herr’s memory may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster, PA 17602.
