John W. “Big John” Palmer, Jr., age 69, passed away on December 4, 2015 at Oak Leaf Manor.  He was the son of the late William “Bill” Palmer, Sr. and the late Edith “Dede” (Wood) Palmer.  He lived at 1933 Millersville Pike and Oak Leaf Manor Inc.

John was born on May 3, 1946 in Lancaster, PA.  He was a life member of First Presbyterian Church on Orange St. in Lancaster, PA.  He graduated from J.P. McCaskey High School in 1964 and attended East Stroudsburg State College and Parsons College.  John played varsity baseball and basketball.  He played baseball for the following teams: J.P. McCaskey, the Elks Club, Lancaster and the Falcons.

He also played basketball for the YMCA and other local basketball teams.  John participated in drag racing at York US 30 Cecil County and Maple Grove raceways.  He was an honorary member of the Vagabonds Rod & Custom Associations, Inc.

“Big John” worked for Trojan Boat, Hamilton Watch Co., Eshelman Quarry, KD Tool, Armstrong World Industries and TAL on Columbia Ave.

He was a member of Demolay and Victor Emmanuel the 2nd, Columbia Fraternal Society and National Association of Basketball Coaches.

John’s interests included photography, gardening, cooking, books, travel, golf and attending car shows.

John is survived by a sister Alice “Penny” Palmer Adkins and husband Dr. Henry Thomas Adkins, Jr.  Also surviving is a nephew, Henry Thomas Adkins III and wife Joanne; and grand-nephews, Henry Thomas Adkins IV and William Palmer Adkins, and several cousins.

John stated, “Everything good that has happened in my life I owe to my church, family and friends.  I’d like to say thank you.”

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Funeral Service in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA 17602, on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at 11:00 AM. with the Rev. Dr. Geoffrey  Kohler officiating. Family will greet friends from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
