Katharine Giering Bush

Katharine Giering Bush of 1865 Villa Court, Rohrerstown, died at her Homestead Village home on Monday, March 9, 2015.  Known as “Kay” all her life, she was 84.

She was born at her maternal grandmother’s home in the Lansingburgh section of Troy, NY, the daughter of Ada Simmons Giering and Percival L. Giering.  She grew up in Lansingburgh, Detroit, and in both the greater Boston and New York City areas as the family moved for her father’s work as a consulting electrical engineer.

Kay graduated from high school in Great Neck, Long Island, NY, where the family lived when her father was head electrical engineer for the 1939-40 World’s Fair in nearby Flushing Meadows.

She graduated in 1950 from Centenary Junior College in Hackettstown, NJ, and in 1953 from Russell Sage College in Troy, where she majored in Medical Technology and did her laboratory training at Troy’s Samaritan Hospital.

In 1954 Kay was married to Frederick S. “Fred” Bush, whom she met while in college.  The couple first lived in Boston, where her husband was serving in the U.S. Coast Guard and Kay worked as a certified medical technologist at Robert Breck Brigham Hospital.

Homes during Fred’s career as a newspaperman were in Schenectady, NY, Emerson, NJ, and Mattapoisett, MA and Lancaster, where they arrived in 1962, now with four children.

After ten years at home, Kay joined Stephen D. Lockey Jr. MD, at newly formed Allergy Immunology Associates of Lancaster and as office manager for nearly 30 years helped it grow from a “one-girl office” to a thriving medical practice with multiple locations and physicians.

Kay’s favorite hobby was enjoying and training dogs. For several years she was active in competing in obedience trials at dog shows.  With her collie Gypsy she once appeared with other trainers and dogs in an exhibition in Yankee Stadium between games of a doubleheader.

She also was featured in an article in Liberty Magazine about helping the president of Centenary Junior College train a newly acquired puppy.  During her lifetime, family dogs included a beagle, chow, several collies, two Welch terriers, a miniature schnauzer and a shih tzu.

She also enjoyed volunteering in her children’s activities, raising plants, playing bridge, traveling and sailing with her husband on the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay.

After moving to Homestead Village with her husband in 2004 she served for several years as head of the Residents Dining Committee.

Surviving in addition to her husband are Carolynn B. Luby and her husband Jay of Carlisle, MA; Nancy B. Pierson and her husband Frank of Larchmont, NY, and Robert C. Bush and his wife Sterling of Wilsonville, OR.

Five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a brother, Dr. Warren P. Giering and his wife Kathy of Buxton, ME, also survive.  She was pre-deceased by her parents and a son, William.

A memorial Eucharist is planned for 11 a.m. on Easter Monday, April 6
