Kathleen B. Pflieger
Kathleen B. Pflieger, 90, departed this life on September 2, 2020. Kathleen is survived by her devoted husband of 69 years, Frederick C. Pflieger. Among those who keep her in their hearts are her children Barbara Mory (Tom) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Debbie Bartle (Gary) of Midlothian, Virginia; Kurt Pflieger of Rockwall, Texas; and Gretchen Huebner (Glenn) of West Chester, Pennsylvania. Nana loved each of her grandchildren, Josh Mory (Courtney) of Tucson, Arizona; Jenna Aubuchon (Adam) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Kenna Bartle of Denver, Colorado; Charles Pflieger of Washington, D.C.; Chad Pflieger of Boulder, Colorado; Heather Cook ( Ryan) of West Chester, Pennsylvania; and Andrew Huebner of West Chester, Pennsylvania as well as her great-grandchildren Ryan and Morgan Aubuchon and Aiden Cook. Kathleen and Fred also had many surrogate grandchildren, people who loved them so and felt as if they were part of their family.
Kathleen was the only child of Ethel and Samuel Bayne. She spent her childhood in Ridley Park, PA and attended West Chester State Teachers’ College where she received her B.A. in Music Education and later a master’s degree. Kathleen and Fred met during their college years, fell in love and married. Kathleen wanted to have a big family and she achieved that wish. Their four children were raised primarily in West Chester where the family resided for many years. While raising her children, Kathleen had a career as an educator, working as a music teacher in the Coatesville, PA school system for most of her professional career, teaching high school, middle school,and elementary school music. Kathleen and Fred provided a life rich in cultural experiences and travel for their children, including annual family camping trips. Seven weeks in Europe with a VW microbus and tent and a cross country trip in the United States visiting many national parks were highlights and tributes to Kathleen’s planning and family closeness.
After retirement, Kathleen and Fred moved to Ocean Pines, Maryland where they enjoyed many years of hosting family and friends, playing tennis, bicycling and swimming. Kathleen and Fred traveled the world throughout their lives especially after retirement, touching every continent, with Kathleen playing the role of travel agent. Travel took them to Europe, China, Australia,New Zealand, Russia, the Galapagos, Antarctica, Morocco, Costa Rica, Mexico and many other national and international destinations. For many years, they spent the month of February in Maui. Their lives were enriched by travel and the friendships made along the way. They participated in ElderHostel programs, (whale watching, birding, eco-adventures), cycling trips in exotic locations and many other unique adventures. Kathleen organized family travel to Switzerland for the entire family to celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary. For many years, Christmas time would find Kathleen and Fred treating family to vacations in Bermuda, Cancún, Jamaica, Roatán, the Virgin Islands , and more.
Over her long and happy life, Kathleen delighted in the company of her family and friends. She was great at maintaining friendships via phone, correspondence, and social media. She had many personal pursuits including sewing, quilting, playing her violin, planning many trips to enjoy with Fred, and managing her husband’s concerts. She was everyone’s biggest cheerleader and was present for so many times in the lives of her family. For the last ten years of her life, Kathleen and her beloved Fred lived in the Willow Valley Communities where she found great happiness, treasured friends, and many sweet relationships with the staff. Kathleen enjoyed seeing everyone and exchanging quips and kindness every day. She found satisfaction in reading for her book clubs, the poetry group, volunteering at a local elementary school and singing with the Willow Valley Chorale. Kathleen was immensely proud of Fred’s musical gifts and encouraged him to use his talent as a vocalist, arranging many concerts for him to perform at friends’ homes in Ocean Pines and also at Willow Valley.
At Kathleen’s request, Fred gave a beautiful concert for her 90th birthday in early February 2020 for a large group of family and friends.
Mom / Nana / Honey was affectionate, fun loving, and devoted to her husband and family. She was braver and stronger than she thought she was. She was a people person but just as happy spending her days with Fred. She had a giving spirit, a sweet smile, and a beautiful soul. She enjoyed making people happy. She loved to hold hands! Our family thanks all of those who held her hand, particularly in the last few months while she was cared for by the caregivers at The Glen at Willow Valley Communities.
