Lee Wellman Trow

Lee Wellman Trow died in her sleep September, 25, 2014, age 90, at Homestead Village, Lancaster, PA. The daughter of Howard and Charlotte Wellman, Lee was born and grew up in Buffalo, NY.  She attended Bethany College and the University of Michigan, from which she graduated with a BS in Physical Education.  She taught at Mt. Clemens (MI) High School and did her graduate study at the University of Michigan in Political Science.

She and Don were married in 1948 and lived in Mt Clemens, Ann Arbor, Pittsburgh, and Hamden, CT before moving to Binghamton, NY in 1960 where Don became Professor of Sociology at Harpur College, now Binghamton University.   Lee was an outdoor enthusiast: camping, canoeing, swimming, hiking, cross-country skiing, bicycling, and horseback riding.  She hiked in England, the Austrian Alps, and New Zealand and bicycled in Greece, Crete, England, Ireland, and Nova Scotia, as well as both around Binghamton.  She climbed all 46 Adirondack peaks over 4,000 feet and all 36 Catskill peaks over 3,500 feet, the latter in winter on snowshoes.  She canoed extensively on Adirondack lakes and streams and did the Big Bend stretch of the Rio Grande and a section of the Green River.  She was active in Girl Scouts as a leader, trainer, and Board member of Indian Hills Girl Scout Council.  She did volunteer work for and was employed at Planned Parenthood and the Susquehanna School, and for 25 years delivered meals for Meals-on-Wheels.  She was a member of Binghamton Lyceum, various choral groups, and of Binghamton University Women, from which she was named Woman of Achievement by the Status of Women Council in 1995.  In 2008 she and Don moved to Lancaster, PA.

She leaves many dear friends, including those in the hiking and reading groups to which she belonged. She is survived by her husband, Donald B. Trow, and by their children: son Stephen C. Trow, his long-time partner Robin Kessler, and his children Jennie and Kevin; daughter and son-in-law Pamela and Kirk Liddell and their children, Dr. Jennifer (and husband Dr. Daniel) Kaminstein, Devon, James (and wife Heather) and Tim; son and daughter-in-law W. Clark and Kim Trow and their daughter Leah; and by great-grandsons Noah, Liam, and Asher Kaminstein.

Funeral and interment arrangements will be private.
