Leonard E. Maurer

Leonard E. Maurer, 79, of Lancaster, died peacefully on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Hamilton Arms Center. He was the loving husband of Nancy L. (Schwanger) Maurer and they celebrated their 50

th

wedding anniversary in April. Born in Hegins, PA, he was the son of the late William R. “Philby” and Edna S. (Schmeltz) Maurer.

Leonard graduated from Hegins Township High School in 1952. While in high school, he played baseball, basketball, and soccer and played the tuba in the band. While attending high school, he worked at Kimmel’s Dairy in Valley View, PA. Leonard attended Franklin & Marshall College and served in the Army National Guard for 7 years. In his youth, Leonard obtained his pilot’s license and was the proud owner of his own Piper Cub airplane. He also enjoyed boating, hunting, attending Penn State Football games, and family vacations in Ocean City, MD.  He was an avid reader of history and military books.

Leonard retired from Community Action Program of Lancaster County, where he was the manager for the WIC Formula Distribution Center. He was a member of Saint Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church and participated in numerous church committees and volunteer programs.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children: Cynthia L.(Maurer) Hall, wife of Derrick A. Hall, Ronks, PA and William D. Maurer, husband of Elizabeth A. (Shellenberger) Maurer, Marietta, PA. He will be lovingly missed by his grandchildren, Chase E. Hall, Lauryn N. Hall, Daniel J. Maurer, and Benjamin J. Maurer. He is also survived by his sister, Sandra L. (Maurer) Pool, wife of Larrie Pool, Lancaster, PA. He was preceded in death by his brother, Warren R. Maurer who died on June 5

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 700 Pleasure Road, Lancaster, PA with the Rev. Jillian Riddle officiating.  Friends may call at the Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, 141 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA on Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. and at the church on Tuesday morning at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service.  Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family in Conestoga Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Maurer’s memory may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 700 Pleasure Road, Lancaster, PA  17601 or to Hospice for All Seasons, 2741 Paxton St., Suite 200, Harrisburg, PA  17111.
