LeRoy E. Duke, “Dukie”
LeRoy E. Duke, 84, of Lancaster, PA, died Sunday, September 4, 2011 at home. He was the husband of Delorous Hemperly Duke, and they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in February, 2012. Born in Lancaster, PA, he was the son of the late Roy Edward and Naomi Spang Duke.
Dukie was a ’46 graduate of J.P.McCaskey High School, where he competed in soccer and wrestling. He was inducted into the Lancaster-Lebanon Wrestling Hall of Fame. He attended Millersville University and was a member of their 1st wrestling team. He enjoyed being a volunteer wrestling coach for the Boys Club of Lancaster. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
LeRoy was the proprietor of LeRoy E. Duke Distributor in Lancaster. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. As a member of the Manheim Township Lions Club, he received the Humanitarian Services Award in 2010. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge # 43 F. & A.M., Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo Temple of Harrisburg, Lancaster County Shrine Club, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, VFW Millersville Post # 7294, American Legion Post #34 Lancaster, Amvets Post #19 Lancaster, Commercial Traveler’s Assoc., and the Lancaster County Old Timers.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jeffrey W., husband of Carolann Duke, (and grandchildren Kelly, wife of Nathan Cote, Shannon Duke, fiancé of Michael Bocchino and Timothy Duke), Gregory L., husband of Pam Duke; two daughters, Cynthia, wife of John Rathvon, Jr., (and grandchildren Tyler and Crystalynn Rathvon), and Nanette, wife of Glenn McCarty (and granddaughters Chelsy and Cayla McCarty); two sisters, Nancy Rineer and Patricia Ulmer. He was predeceased by two sisters and one brother.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service at Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster, PA on Friday, September 9th at 11:00 A.M. Friends may call at the Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, 141 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA on Thursday, September 8th from 6:00-8:00 P.M. and at the church on Friday from 10:00 until time of service. A Masonic service will be conducted by Lodge # 43 F. & A.M. at the funeral home Thursday at 7:30 P.M.
