Lewis Robb Dunn died Monday morning at the Mennonite Home after a wonderful Christmas gathering with his family. He was 90 years old, and was the husband of Ruth Harrington Dunn for 62 years.
Lew was born May 8, 1921 in Braddock, PA, the eldest son of Rev. David Dunn and Kathryn Robb Dunn. He grew up in Harrisburg, graduating from William Penn High School in 1939. In May 1943 he graduated from Franklin and Marshall College with a B.S. in Chemistry and immediately entered Midshipman’s School at Notre Dame, receiving his commission as an ensign in the U.S. Navy.
He served in the Pacific theater as a radio officer on the U.S.S. Thornton, a seaplane tender. Discharged in 1946, he began work at Hercules Powder Co. in Wilmington, DE, where he met Ruth Ann Harrington of Princess Anne, MD. They were married April 1, 1949.
For two years during the Korean Conflict, Lew and Ruth lived in Puerto Rico, where he served at the US Naval Base, San Juan. They moved to Lancaster in 1952, where Lew began his career with Armstrong, working as a research chemist in the Building Products Division and as a Sales Trainer.
After retirement from Armstrong in 1984, Lew spent time with Ruth traveling the world and walking around the block. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the F & M Alumni Phonathon.
Lew loved music, especially jazz and Big Band, and played upright bass in several local groups, including the Columbians. He was in the U.S. Naval Reserves for over 20 years, retiring with rank of Lieutenant Commander, and was a member and President of the Lancaster chapter of the Retired Officers’ Association.
Lew was a member of St. Peter’s UCC in Lancaster, where he served as Elder and Consistory President and sang in the Choir.
In addition to his wife, Lew is survived by a son, Kameron, husband of Deirdre, Refton, PA; a daughter, Benay, wife of Gary Bodrog, Crofton, MD; and a granddaughter, Brittany Rankin; a brother, Dr. Phjilip Dunn, Huntingdon, PA ; and two sisters, Carolyn Shellenberger, Somerset, PA and Barbara Mensendiek, Claremont, CA.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Rev. Stanley Dunn and Dr. John M. Dunn, and a beloved son, Rondeigh Harrington Dunn.
Lew was patriarch of his family, a great friend of people and he touched so many lives in a positive way.
A memorial service celebrating Lew’s life will be held Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Mennonite Home Chapel, 1520 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The family will greet visitors from 10 a.m.
