Lilia D. Mena, M.D.

Lilia Fe Deconich Mena, M.D., 93, of Elizabethtown, PA, died on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at the Masonic Village.  Born in Cardenas, Matanzas, Cuba, she was the daughter of the late Pedro and Delores Fernandez  Deconich.  Lilia was the loving wife of the late Calixto “Armando” Mena, to whom she had been married for 57 years.

She attended both University and Medical School in Havana, Cuba, at the University of Havana, where she became a certified Pediatrician.

After her family escaped Cuba in the early 1960’s, she was able to acquire her United States citizenship.  Lilia earned her U.S. Medical License in 1968 and began working as a Psychiatrist at the Norristown State Hospital.  After retiring from the hospital, she tremendously enjoyed volunteering at the Hospital Flea Market.

Lilia was a member of numerous medical groups and organizations, where she spent many hours volunteering and socializing.  She loved to travel, shop and spending time at the casinos in Atlantic City.

She is survived by two children: a son, Pedro, husband of Lois Mena, of Bainbridge, PA; a daughter, Margarita Maconaghy, of Jamison, PA; 4 grandchildren, Tyler Mena, Andrew, Carly and Shannon Maconaghy; and a “brother”, Juan Fernandez.  She is predeceased by 2 sisters: Emma Fernandez, and   Elsa Deconich and a brother, Pedro Deconich.

A luncheon will be held Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 1:00 PM in Norristown, PA.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice and Community Care, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.
