Lois A. Herr

Our mother, Lois A. Herr, 95, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2014 at the Mennonite Home.

She was the wife of the late Franklin R. Herr who passed away in 1956.

Born in Manor Twp., she was the daughter of the late John K. and Martha Landis Charles.  Lois graduated from Manor Twp. High School in 1936.

After her husband’s death, Lois worked at various jobs – stand holder at Central Market and Root’s Market and at a greenhouse.  In 1967, she began waitressing part-time at Willow Valley Restaurant until her retirement in July 2002, after 35 years of service.

Lois was a member of Willow Street Mennonite Church where in her younger years, she taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday School.

In 1994, she moved to Woodcrest Villa and resided there until July 2008, when she moved to the Mennonite Home because she needed more care.

While at Woodcrest Villa, she volunteered at Water Street Ministries and at the Mennonite Home Thrift Store.  She enjoyed sewing and made many lap robes and baby comforts.

She is survived by three daughters – Delores H., wife of Glen W. Short, Lithia Springs, GA; Dawn E., wife of David L. Weaver, Lancaster; and Cathy A., wife of Glenn D. Garman, Manheim, along with 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, J. Wilmer Charles and Milford Charles, and sister-in-law, Mary Ella Herr.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the Mennonite Home for their loving care of Lois over the past 5 ½ years.

A funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 8, at 10:00 A.M. in the Eagle Commons of the Eagle Wing at Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA.  Friends may call at the chapel at the Mennonite Home, 1520 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and at Woodcrest Villa on Saturday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the service.  Interment in the Willow Street Mennonite Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Water Street Ministries, P.O. Box 7267, Lancaster, PA  17604-7267.
