Margaret Lydia Walters

Margaret Lydia Walters, 92, of Tunkhannock, died March 24, 2011 at Mercy Tyler Hospital after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Walters, in 1990 and her nephew, Donald Harding III, in 2002.

Born July 1, 1918, in Thurston Hollow, she was the daughter of Clarence B. and Florence (Phinney) Allshouse. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Landisville, PA and a 1936 graduate of Tunkhannock High School.

Margaret graduated from Mansfield State College in May of 1940 with a degree in Home Economics. She enlisted in the Army in December of 1942 and served with the 807th Army Air Force Base Unit until her discharge in December of 1945. She was very proud of her military service and especially pleased when a memorial was erected in Washington, DC commemorating the contribution of women in the military during World War II.

Margaret lived in Lancaster County from 1945 until 2006. She worked as a dietitian for Lancaster General Hospital. She worked in the financial department of Raub Supply and retired in 1990. After retirement, she found a new career as a hostess at the Dutch Apple Theater in Lancaster Co. Her final and most interesting job was with the after-school program at Hempfield School District where she got to interact with children as they did their homework and played after school.

Surviving are her sister, Alice Allshouse Harding; her niece and husband, Jan Harding and John Ambrutis; two great nieces, Marne Greenley and Erika Edwards; a great-great nephew, Ethan Greenley; and three great-great nieces, Mercedes Shultz, Paige Greenley and Olivia Greenley.

Private interment in Salunga Mennonite Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family.
