Margaret Moffat Young

Margaret Moffat Young, 88, of Lancaster, PA died Sunday, January 27, 2013.

She was born to the late John Gilchrist and Jane (Scull) Moffat on September 18, 1924 in Scranton, PA. Margaret graduated from The Knox School and attended Vassar College. She married the late John P. Dowdney in 1947. They lived together in New York, NY and East Hampton, NY.

She later married Nigel Young of Edinburgh, Scotland, an ex-RAF pilot who fought in World War II. They lived in East Hampton, NY until Nigel passed away in 1988.

Margaret served as a Nurses’ Aide in World War II, and in 1946 went overseas as a counselor with the Maclannet Committee for Aid to French War Orphans.

She was passionate about politics and was actively involved in the Republican Party in New York State. She served as Chairwoman of the Women’s Division of the New York State Citizens for Eisenhower. She was also actively involved in Richard Nixon’s Presidential campaign on Long Island.

Margaret was active in the Friends of the Philharmonic and the Junior League, both of New York City. She also served on the Executive Committee of the Town and Village of East Hampton as well as the Village of East Hampton Citizens for Eisenhower.

Margaret and Nigel both went to work for Edward F. Cook Realty in East Hampton in the mid-1960’s. They later started their own firm, Woods Lane Estate Agents and subsequently Young and Company which operated throughout the late ‘70s and through the ‘80s before rolling into Allan Schneider after Nigel’s death in 1988.

Margaret is survived by her sister, Jane Mueller of Lancaster, PA, wife of Paul A. Mueller, Jr.; three children: Lisa Dowdney of Leadville, CO, Deborah Dowdney Seaman of Eagle, CO, and James Young of East Hampton, NY; and five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at a date to be announced in May 2013 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in East Hampton, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations in Margaret’s memory be made to the Mathias J. Brunner Nursing Education Fund, Willow Valley Retirement Communities, 600 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, PA 17602
