Mary Jane Haines

Mary Jane Haines passed away peacefully at Lancaster Mennonite Home on February 1, 2011. She was born in 1917 in E m p r e s s , Alberta, Canada. Her parents were Edwin Clark and Maud Gontner Herr, both from Lancaster, PA. Her parents had spent several decades homesteading as wheat farmers in Alberta and returned to Lancaster in the late 1920’s. Mary Jane attended Upper Leacock schools and graduated from West Chester College as a physical education major. In 1940, she married Robert Cheney Haines who ran the family business of L. B. Herr & Son. He passed away in 2003. She taught physical education and elementary education over a period of 40 years. She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Haines and Beth Lichty, her son-inlaw, Clement Lichty, and 5 grandchildren, Sarah Cherry Katz, Joshua Cherry, Daniel Cherry, Nicole Lichty, and Gretchen Lichty. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service from the First Presbyterian Church, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA on Saturday, February 12th, at 11 AM. The family will greet friends at the church from 10 AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, “Special Deacon’s Fund,” 140 East Orange St., Lancaster, PA 17602.  Arrangements by the Kearney A.
