Mary S. Mccommon

Mary S. McCommon, 92, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 25, at Country Meadows Retirement Community.  She was the widow of H. Ross McCommon, who died in 1991, and the daughter of the late Howard B. and Mary D. Stauffer of Landisville.

A graduate of Hempfield High School, Class of 1939, she graduated from Lancaster Business College and was a retired legal secretary, having worked for several lawyers in the Lancaster community.  Her faith was very important to her, and she was a long-time member of Hamilton Park United Church of Christ, serving as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher for many years.

All who knew her will remember Mary as a wonderful, loving and giving person.   Her smile, thoughtfulness, kind words and generosity were showered on everyone she met.  To many of her friends’ children, she was affectionately known as Aunt Mary, and, in later years, Grandma Mary.  She loved and cherished her family, including her two daughters, Mindy, wife of Mel Newcomer, and Margie, wife of Rick Koehler.  She also is survived by five grandchildren, Megan Dreisbach, married to Christopher, Brad Koehler, married to Johanna, Andrew Koehler, married to Ember, Nick Koehler, and Michael Newcomer, married to Kate, and four great-grandchildren, Elliotte, Madelyn, William and Tyler, as well as a baby boy to be born in September.   Her two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

Mary had many interests and especially loved flowers, the beach and playing bridge.  For more than seven decades, she and the Hempfield girls had a monthly bridge club.  She was always ready for a game of “honeymoon” bridge and taught the game to family members, so that she would always have someone with whom to play.

Our family is grateful to all of the staff at Country Meadows who provided such warm and loving care to our mother over the past several months.   Their compassion and concern were a comfort to her and the entire family.

A service remembering Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, August 2, at Hamilton Park United Church of Christ, 1210 Maple Avenue, Lancaster PA 17603, at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Catherine Shiley and the Reverend David Bushnell officiating.  The family will greet friends at a visitation and reception in the Maugans Chapel of the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.    Interment will be in Maytown Union Cemetery.

In place of flowers, the family requests that anyone wishing to do so may make contributions in Mary’s memory to Hamilton Park UCC at the address shown above.
