Mary G. Smith, 93, of Lancaster passed away peacefully on Friday, June 11, 2010. Born in Rohrerstown, PA, she was the daughter of the late John B. Graybill and Mary Leyden. She was married for 50 years to the late J. Edwards Smith, III of Philadelphia. She was preceded in death by her three brothers, John, Charles and Richard and a sister, Helen.
Mary Graybill Smith was Valedictorian and secretary of her class at the Millersville State Teachers College. Upon graduation, she became a teacher in a one-room Amish schoolhouse and later, after her marriage to J. Edwards Smith, tutored home-bound children throughout the county. As a lifelong member of St. James Episcopal Church, she served on many committees and was involved in the formation of Lancaster’s Town Fair. She volunteered tirelessly in her community for the Junior League and American Red Cross, was an avid golfer and travelled throughout the world with her husband. She was steadfast in her support and devotion to her family and friends. She enjoyed reading, completing Sunday New York Times crossword puzzles and writing whimsical poetry for special occasions. Her granddaughter, Amy, remembers spending many holiday hours helping “Nanny” roll wafer-thin sand tarts and sprinkling them with cinnamon sugar and crushed peanuts.
Mary is survived by three sons, J. Andrew Smith of San Bernardino, California, Robert G. Smith of Lancaster, Stephen E. Smith of Palm Coast, Florida and their wives Paula, Deborah and Valerie Reither. Amy C. Smith, daughter of Robert and Deborah, is Mary’s only grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at Homestead Village, 1800 Village Circle, Lancaster, PA at 10 AM on Saturday, June 26. The family will greet family and friends from 9:30 AM until the time of the service and immediately following the service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mary’s name to the Lancaster Chapter of the American Red Cross, 430 W. Orange St., Lancaster, PA 17603.
