Mary W. Wentz

Mary Louise Whitney Wentz, 97, formerly of Strasburg passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Willow Valley where she had resided since 1995. Mary was born in Mt. Rainier, MD and was the daughter of Leora J. Simms and Frank I. Whitney. She was the wife of Dr. Henry S. Wentz.
Mary attended public schools in the Washington, DC area and graduated from Duke University in 1942. She married her college sweetheart, Henry, in 1943 and moved to Strasburg in 1948. Mary was active in the community and her church. She was a member of the Lancaster City/County Medical Auxiliary (pres.), Visiting Nurses Association (pres. and treas.), Parish Resource Center (pres.), American Field Service (field dir.), and was instrumental in the founding of Hospice of Lancaster. She served on the board of the United Way, the Lancaster General Hospital Auxiliary, Lancaster Community Concert Board. and was a member of the Strasburg Heritage Society (sec.). She was on many church boards both locally and conference -wide including the Health and Welfare Committee of the Philadelphia Conference of the United Methodist Church. Mary was a former member of Wesley United Methodist Church and presently belonged to First United Methodist in Lancaster.
Mary enjoyed traveling with her husband and with her family, ballroom dancing, and spending time with family. Special locations were Stone Harbor, NJ, The Greenbrier, and St. Martin.
Mary is survived by her husband, Dr. Henry S. Wentz, and their children, William H. (Anne) of Naperville, IL and Louise W. (Thomas) Aument of Lancaster. She is survived by four grandchildren, Jennifer (Tim), Janine (Dan), Brandon (Michelle), and Cameron (Amanda), 3 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a sister, Marjorie Smith of Poulsbo,WA.
The family would like to thank the staff of Cedarbrook and the Glen 5th floor for the supportive and nurturing care extended to Mary during her illness.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Mary’s life on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 11:00 AM in the Johnson Auditorium, Willow Valley Manor North, 600 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, PA. A visitation will be held from 10:30 AM until the time of the service. Attendees are encouraged to wear red to celebrate Mary’s life. Interment will be private in Greenwood Cemetery.
