Milton K. Morgan, Jr.
Milton K. Morgan Jr., 79, of Lancaster, died Friday, December 9, 2011 at Hospice of Lancaster County after a bout with cancer.
A Lancaster native, Milt built his life in the community where he grew up. He was a Manheim Township High School graduate, owner and president of the J. Walter Miller Co., an active civic group member and a lifelong Presbyterian.
Most of all, he was a family man, who was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He and his wife Lois Todd Morgan met in the seventh grade and were married 58 years.
Milt grew up in Eden and graduated from Manheim Township in 1950, later earning a Distinguished Alumni Award from the district.
After marrying Lois and earning his business degree at Penn State, Milt and his new wife left Lancaster County for his job at General Motors, in Defiance, Ohio. In 1958, the couple moved back home and Milt began his work at J. Walter Miller Co., the family business at 411 E. Chestnut St.
Begun in a one-car garage at North Queen and Chestnut streets in 1887 by his grandfather, J. Walter Miller, the company grew into a major manufacturer of commercial brass and bronze castings. In 1992, Milt retired from the business, which now is in his family’s fifth generation.
Outside of his business life, Milt was a 52-year member and past president of the Lancaster Northeast Rotary, with perfect attendance. He also coached the club’s midget baseball team for 25 years.
Since 1941, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, where he sang in the choir, served as an elder and trustee and was a life member of the George Mann Bible Class. He and his wife were lead donors in the update of the historic church building and supported its music programs and its mission work in Kenya.
When it came to Penn State, Milt was blue and white to the core. He and his wife supported the women’s basketball program, as well as the construction of the Bryce Jordan Center and the university’s baseball stadium, Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Spurred by his admiration for the university’s commitment to the academic endeavors of athletes, Milt and his wife gave a major gift in 2005 establishing the Morgan Academic Support Center for Student Athletes. The center provides tutoring, study spaces in athletic facilities and laptop computers for student athletes. In 2008, the Morgans also endowed the Morgan Center director’s position. The couple enjoyed meeting student athletes and attending an annual academic awards banquet, to celebrate the accomplishments of the young people they wanted to see succeed. Milt and his wife also supported the arts locally, including the Fulton Theatre, the former Pennsylvania Academy of Music, and the Manheim Township Public Library. They also were supporters of renovations at Central Market, where Milt’s grandmother, mother and wife shopped.
Milt was a member of the Hamilton Club and a former member of Meadia Heights Golf Club and the Avalon Golf Club.
In addition to golf, Milt enjoyed bridge, walking, reading, sports in general and the Dodgers in particular.
Milt was the son of the late Milton K. and Elizabeth Miller Morgan. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Stella, wife of Fred Guion of Lancaster. He also is survived by his children: twin sons, Milton K. Morgan III, husband of Dory, of Lancaster, and Walter T. Morgan, husband of Vicky, of Oak Ridge, N.C.; a daughter, Sandy, wife of Dr. James Correll, of Prince George, Va.; and a son, Charles R. Morgan, husband of Janet, of Pompano Beach, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA with the Rev. Dr. Randolph T. Riggs officiating. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday morning from 9:30 A.M. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Milt’s memory may be sent to First Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund, 140 E.
