Mrs. Nancy Greiner Gutzwiller, 90, of Lancaster, passed away on Monday November 12, 2012 at Hospice and Community Care.
Mrs. Gutzwiller was born on July 1, 1922 in Lancaster, PA to Harry Wachstetter Greiner and Elizabeth Strickler Greiner. Working at the Post Office in Landisville, PA to put herself through college, she met the man of her dreams, Dr. Robert L. Gutzwiller. He knew that she was the one for him when a Saturday night date found her not at the movies as planned, but in a barn assisting him with an emergency procedure on a bull. They married several years later. After earning her teaching degree from Millersville State Teachers’ College, she taught elementary school for several years in the Lancaster school system before leaving to become a mother and office manager for her husband’s veterinary practice.
A gregarious woman with a passion for gardening, she led tours through the Conestoga House gardens. Her own award-winning gardens were visited by garden club tours that came especially to see her many hosta varieties. She was also a long time member of the Lancaster Tennis Club and the Red Rose Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America.
Mrs. Gutzwiller is survived by 3 sons, David L., husband of Carol Gutzwiller of Jacksonville, FL, Steven R. of Mountville, PA, Roger S., husband of Paulette Gutzwiller of Blairstown, NJ; 3 step-grandchildren, Terri Brown, Holly Shuart, and John Shuart, and one step-great granddaughter, Zoe Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years Dr. Robert L. Gutzwiller, her older brother John Henry Greiner, and her younger sister Helen Greiner Rawles.
A private memorial will be held by immediate family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice and Community Care, PO Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604.
