Nellie M. Lewis

Nellie M. Lewis, 88, of Lancaster, passed away on January 28, 2014 at The Glen at Willow Valley where she had been a resident for the past four years.  Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, she was the daughter of the late Leonard O. and Elsie Lewis Gregory.  Her husband, Thomas R. Lewis, Sr. passed away in 2000.  She was a 1943 graduate of Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre.

A former member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, she was active in the Presbyterian Women organization.  Upon moving to Homestead Village, Nellie became a member of Church of the Apostles, United Church of Christ.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband prior to his death.  Together they visited all 50 states, Canada and the British Isles.  Her family was the most important focus of her life.  Nellie was happiest when caring for children and preparing meals for her family.  Affectionately known as “Grammy” to her family as well as her loving caregivers on the second floor of the Glen, she had a special love for children.

Surviving are five children: Thomas R. Jr., husband of Linda S. Lewis of Lancaster, Gregory O., husband of Deborah H. Lewis of Moreno Valley, CA, William R., husband of Anita L. Lewis of East Petersburg, PA,  David O., husband of Linda G. Lewis of Colleyville, TX and Karen J., wife of Christopher G. Braun of Millersville, PA; two sisters, Jeanette, wife of William Ashton of Wilkes-Barre, PA and Carol Borland of Chittenango, NY; 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Phillips.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Memorial Service at Church of the Apostles U.C.C., 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, PA 17603 on Saturday, February 8, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Kathryn L. Kuhn officiating.  Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Private interment will be in Millersville Mennonite Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Nellie’s memory may be sent to Hospice and Community Care, PO Box 4125; Lancaster, PA  17604-4125 or Church of the Apostles, U.C.C. at the address listed above.
