Nina Hill Copenhafer, born December 3, 1925, passed away at her residence at the Lancaster Mennonite Home on Monday, November 5, 2018. Nina was the daughter of Sam and Lillian Hill and the sister of Richard D. Hill, all of whom predeceased her.
She was the wife of David T. Copenhafer, Jr. who passed away in May 2010. She was step-mother to David Copenhafer of Alexandria, Virginia; Robert Copenhafer of Winchester, Virginia; and William Copenhafer formerly of Yardley, Pennsylvania who passed away in 2009. In addition to her stepsons David and Robert, she leaves behind her daughters-in-law Youngnan Copenhafer, Diane Copenhafer and Ann Copenhafer as well as six grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful and caring mother to us all in every way imaginable. She was an excellent home maker, interior decorator, and cook, and is fondly remembered for the extraordinary numbers and kinds of cookies she baked every Christmas.
A life-long resident of Lancaster, Nina worked at RCA for 12 years before marrying David. Following her marriage in 1956, Nina was active in the community with volunteer work as well as with hobbies and travel. She was a recovery room volunteer at Lancaster General Hospital for 44 years. She also served a term as president of the Town and Country Garden Club, and was chairman of the Flower Committee at First Presbyterian Church for several years. An avid gardener, Nina was well known locally for her extensive collection of orchids which she raised and maintained with great pride in the greenhouse David built for her at 12 Schoolhouse Road.
Nina and David traveled extensively for many years, visiting numerous European, African, Central and South American countries, including Switzerland, Germany, Russia, Iceland, Kenya, Honduras, and Peru.
The family wishes to extend its grateful thanks to the nurses and support staff of the Juniata and Goods Run wings of the Mennonite Home for their extraordinary care and devotion to Nina during her time there.
