Noel Siggins Dorwart, 87, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 18, 2011 after a brief illness. Noel was a lifelong resident of Lancaster. He was born on December 25, 1923, the son of the late Harry M. and Marguerite S. Dorwart. Noel was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Ione LeVan Dorwart in March of this year.
Noel graduated from the former East Hempfield High School, attended Colorado College and Franklin and Marshall College. Noel enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 where he served as Quartermaster on the destroyer UUS Blakeley and the minesweeper USS Shea.
Noel was employed by the Lancaster Newspapers, Inc. for 38 years, retiring in 1985 as Retail Advertising Manager.
He and his wife owned and operated Camp Van Dor, a family run local day camp for children. As a community volunteer, Noel was highly involved with East Hempfield Township. He was a census taker in the 1950’s, a poll committee volunteer in the 1960’s, and was appointed to the Township Planning Commission in the 1970’s, where he served as chairman for 5 years. In 1985 he was appointed to the Board of Supervisors, becoming chairman prior to leaving the board in 2000. Noel then served on the Zoning Hearing Board for 8 years.
In 2009 the Township honored Noel by officially dedicating the Noel S. Dorwart Park located on Good Drive.
Noel was a member of the Lancaster AMBUCS, the Lancaster Pirates and a former member of the Hamilton Club.
Surviving are two loving daughters, Louise, D., wife of J. Scott Ulrich of Lancaster and Sally Ione, wife of Quentin C. Clark of Mount Pleasant, SC and a beloved granddaughter, Kathryn Noel, wife of W. Tyler Lowry of Lancaster.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a funeral from Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, 141 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA on Wednesday, December 28th at 11:00 A.M. with the Rev. David L. Longenecker officiating. Friends may call at the Kearney A. Snyder Funeral home on Wednesday, December 28th from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Private interment will be at the convenience of the family.
