Phyllis B. Burkholder, 80, of Homestead Village in Lancaster passed away on Monday, March 5th at Lancaster General Hospital after a 2 year illness. Phyllis was born in Waynesboro, PA on April 20, 1931. She was the daughter of the late J. Frank and Martha Barnhart. She was the wife of Donald L. Burkholder with whom she celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in August, 2011.
Phyllis was a graduate of Waynesboro High School and received her degree in Music at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA. She was a vocal music teacher in Manheim Twp. School District, Manheim Central School District and for most of her career in the Hempfield School District. She was a member of Church of the Apostle U.C.C. in Rohrerstown, PA where she was active in choral work. For several years she was an accompanist and conductor of the Homestead Village Chorus.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her son David, husband of Darcy Burkholder of Hanover, MD; a grandson, James Burkholder of Annapolis, MD; two sisters, Betty Ingles and Doris, wife of Eldon Sheldon of Waynesboro, PA; a niece, Susan, wife of James Roy of Orange Park, FL; and three nephews, John, husband of Virginia Ingels of Waynesboro, PA, Terry, husband of Betsy Sheldon of Waynesboro, PA and Rev. Steven, husband of Kathy Sheldon of Peach Bottom, PA.
A memorial service will be held at Church of the Apostles United Church of Christ, 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, PA, 17603, on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. The family will greet friends at the church on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
