Ralph L. Root, Jr., 80, of Lancaster, PA, peacefully passed away at The Glen at Willow Valley on November 23, 2012.
Born in Lincoln, PA, he was the son of the late Ralph L., Sr. and Viola Groff Root. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Groome Root. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on April 21st.
After graduating from J.P. McCaskey High School in 1950, Ralph worked at Watt and Shand Department Store as a window dresser. Shortly thereafter, he joined and served in the U.S. Army, playing saxophone in the U.S. Army Band. In 1955, he became the assistant manager of the Medical Bureau. He began his career with the Credit Bureau of Lancaster as the general manager in 1964 and retired as its president in 1998. After his retirement, he served as Chairman of the Board of the Credit Bureau of Lancaster. Throughout his career in the credit industry, he served as Treasurer of the Associated Credit Bureaus of Pennsylvania and as Chairman of the Board for the Consumer Data Industry Association.
In 1966, he was honored by the Retail Credit Association of Lancaster with the Credit Award of the Year. He received the Regional Leadership Award from the Associated Credit Bureaus, Inc. in 1971. In 1976, the Golden Sword Award was presented to him by the Pennsylvania Division of the American Cancer Society.
Ralph was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church. For many years, he served on the Board of the Boys and Girls Club. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club, Lancaster Jaycees, Hamilton Club and Conestoga Country Club. His hobbies included golf, duckpin bowling at the Hamilton Club and playing his saxophone.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Debra R., wife of Frank Musso, and Kelley R., wife of Harry Lutz, both of Lancaster, and a son, Douglas, husband of Debra Montgomery Root also of Lancaster. Six grandchildren and a sister, Joyce Becker of Lancaster, also survive him.
A Memorial Mass celebrating his life will be held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Rd., Lancaster, PA on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. with Msgr. Richard A. Youtz as Celebrant. The family will visit with friends immediately following the Mass.
