Rev. Dr. E. Bradford Davis
Rev. Dr. E. Bradford Davis, husband (widower) of Margaret Edna Sayers Davis, died on February 7, 2014, at the Willow Valley Retirement Home, Lancaster, PA.
Brad was born in Philadelphia on July 2, 1921, the son of Thomas Carroll Davis, M.D., and Julia Adams Davis. He graduated from William Penn Charter School in 1939 and then from Yale University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Divinity from the Yale Divinity School. At the Divinity School he received a Tew Prize for excellence in Old Testament and Hebrew. He then earned a Master of Theology and Doctorate of Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary, specializing in American church history, becoming an expert on the Old School/New School theological debate in the Presbyterian Church before the Civil War.
Ordained as a Presbyterian minister in the Timothy Dwight Memorial Chapel at Yale University on May 13, 1945, he had five pastorates: the Presbyterian Church (New Boston, New Hampshire); Holmes (PA) Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Church (Absecon, NJ); Darby (PA) Presbyterian Church; and served as the Senior Pastor of the Kensington United Presbyterian Larger Parish, a consortium of four congregations in Philadelphia. After retirement, he served as Moderator of the Presbytery of Philadelphia, in 1988. At various times he also served as Chaplain for the Civil Air Patrol, The Boy Scouts of America, The General Society of Mayflower Descendants, and Willow Valley Manor.
Brad is survived by his two sons and their families: Dr. Edward Bradford Davis, Jr., a professor at Messiah College, and his wife Kathryn, granddaughters Katherine Elizabeth Gothel and husband Joel, and Julia Lynn Blackburn and husband Michael; and Dr. Thomas W. Davis, a professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and his wife Jennifer.
A memorial service will be held in the Orr Auditorium at Willow Valley Manor 211 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, PA on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at 1:00 pm. Family will greet friends immediately following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dr. Davis’ memory may be made to the Memorial Fund of the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 South Decatur Street, Strasburg, PA 17579.
