Rev. J. George Mamourian

The gates of heaven opened wide to welcome The Rev. J. George Mamourian on January 3, 2014.  George’s 84

th

birthday was just four days away and surely he will celebrate it joyfully with precious family and friends who have lovingly anticipated his arrival.

George was a faithful servant of God and felt called to ministry at age twelve.  He served the United Methodist Church more than fifty years in Philadelphia, Delaware and Chester Counties.  He also served as District Superintendent and found that to be so rewarding.  George was always so pleased to be mentor to both young pastors and young people considering a career in the ministry.    After his “retirement” George joined the ministry of First Reformed U.C.C.  in Lancaster.

George was married for 35 years to the late Jane Carpenter Mamourian who was also a native of the Philadelphia area.  George’s parents and his brother Alfred predeceased him.  George is survived by his three children: Joseph Jr. of Hazleton PA (married to JoAnn Bellinghausen Mamourian), Elisabeth Catherine Corona of East Petersburg PA (married to Kenneth Corona), and Mary Sfiris of Chatham NJ (married to Nick Sfiris).  Six grandchildren survive him.

After being widowed for ten years, George married Linda (Lawson) Alexander of Coatesville where he was pastor at Olivet UMC.  They retired to Lancaster County and have shared fourteen happy years with each other, along with their pet dogs, cats and birds.

George had great affection and concern for all people.  He was not critical for any reason and would often say, “Everybody’s doing the best they can.”   He received many awards for his efforts in helping the poor and homeless and for promoting unity between races.

He was extremely generous and kind and was known for his marvelous sense of humor.  We rejoice in having shared our lives with his.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a funeral at First United Methodist Church, corner of Duke and Walnut Sts., Lancaster, PA on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.  Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Rev. Mamourian’s memory may be sent to: U.M.C.O.R., PO Box 9068, New York, NY 10087 (United Methodist Committee of Relief)
