Rev. John L. Strube, Jr.

The Rev. John L. Strube, Jr., 88, a resident of Luther Acres, Lititz, PA, entered the Church Triumphant on Wednesday, February 10, 2016.

He was married 64 years to Janet Lois Myers Strube.  Born October 10, 1927 in Lansdowne, MD, he was the son of the late John L. and Marie Weber Strube.

Pastor Strube graduated from Catonsville High School in 1944, received his A.B. from Gettysburg College in 1948, his Master of Divinity from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg in 1951 and was ordained a Lutheran Pastor.

Janet and John moved to Ft. Benning, GA, in the summer of 1951, where John began his service as an Army Chaplain.  During his time at Ft. Benning, he was Chaplain of the 30

Infantry Regiment which, soon after his assignment, was ordered by President Truman to the first major combat command in the United States to be racially integrated.  John was ordered to Korea in 1952 where he served as a chaplain in the 17

th

Infantry Regiment, 7

Infantry Division.  He received a Battlefield Promotion to Captain in 1952.  In the spring of 1953 after a year of service in combat, Chaplain Strube was ordered back to the United States to serve out his active duty requirements at Fort Knox, KY.  John continued to remain in the U.S. Army reserves for 31 years.

In his ministerial career, Rev. Strube served the following churches, Faith Lutheran Church in Salisbury, MD, St. Mark/Incarnation Lutheran Church in Washington, D.C., Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lancaster, was Director of Pastoral Services for Lutheran Social Services East Region, Interim pastor at Salem Lutheran Church in Lebanon, PA and was Visitation Pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster.

John experienced a life rich in service to his Lord.  He was surrounded by the love of God, his wife, his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends.

Surviving besides his wife is a daughter, Ann S. wife of Daryl McMichael of New Holland; seven sons, John R. husband of Cynthia Strube of Williamsburg, VA, Paul D. husband of Diane Strube of Fayetteville, GA, Tim E. husband of Dee Strube of Elizabethtown, Mark W. husband of Kristi Strube of Baltimore, MD, Nicholas husband of Cassie Patounas of Lancaster, Say husband of Loy Salien of Lancaster, and Zachary husband of Kindia Sharp of Lancaster; 15 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by an infant son, James Howard Strube.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster, PA with the Rev. Timothy Mentzer officiating.  Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service.  Interment in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Rev. Strube’s memory may be made to the Gettysburg Lutheran Theological Seminary, 61 Seminary Ridge, Gettysburg, PA  17325, to Luther Care, 600 E.
