Richard D. Dombach
Richard D. Dombach, 90, of Lancaster, died Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy.
He was the husband of the late Jeanne Nolte Dombach who died in 2012. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Earl Witmer and Louise Demy Dombach.
Richard was a Professional Engineer starting his career with Armstrong and then retiring from Kerr Glass in 1981. Following his retirement he spent time as a consulting engineer.
He was a graduate of Columbia High School where he had been a lineman on the football team and had played the sax in the band. Following graduation he attended Lebanon Valley College, Steven Institute of Technology in NJ, and then was transferred by the ROTC to Georgia Tech where he graduated in 1948. At Georgia Tech he was a right tackle and played in the Orange Bowl on January 1, 1945.
Richard enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in February 1945 and as a First Lieutenant in February 1948. He served as the Marine Recruiting Station in Philadelphia and Camp Pendleton, CA.
A faithful servant of the Lord, he was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ in Rohrerstown and had been a member of the consistory. Richard was inducted into the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Columbia High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. Early in life he had played baseball with the Columbia American Legion team. Richard was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons. He enjoyed playing golf, bowling and cards.
Surviving are two sons, Douglas husband of Marilynne Dombach of Verona, NJ, and Kevin husband of Nancy Dombach of Millersville; six grandchildren, Teresa Dombach, Melissa wife of Dimitrios Kandylas, Matthew Dombach fiancé of Margo Hanlan, Andrew husband of Tabitha Dombach, Daniel husband of Jessica Dombach and Elizabeth Dombach; four great grandchildren, Connor, Sienna, Kalliopi and Leslie; and two sisters, Ella Louise wife of Chet Kile of Mount Joy and Esther Albright of Columbia.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 15, 2015 at 3:00 P.M. at Salem United Church of Christ, 2312 Marietta Avenue, Lancaster, PA with the Rev. Laverne DiNino officiating. Friends may greet the family at the church on Friday from 2:00 P.M. until the time of the service. Interment in the Habecker Mennonite Cemetery will be private and held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice and Community Care, 685 Good Drive, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125 or to Salem United Church of Christ, 2312 Marietta Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17603.
