Richard K. “Dick” Leiphart, 91, of Leola, died Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Conestoga View.
Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Horace and Susan Eby Leiphart.
Dick was a graduate of McCaskey High School and Millersville University. Richard spent 40 months in the Coast Guard during World War II serving on an Auxiliary Personnel Assault Transport. Following the war, Dick spent three years teaching in the West Chester School District. Following his teaching he worked a short time at Armstrong World Industries and then spent many years at Sperry New Holland where he retired from in 1981. At New Holland he was in charge of designing shipping containers.
In 1982 Dick joined the Lancaster County Consumer Protection Commission and was the executive director until the County no longer funded this all volunteer organization. He was a member and past treasurer of the I.O.O.F. Lodge in New Holland, and Past Commander of the VFW Post 7362 in New Holland. Dick enjoyed working with ceramics in his spare time.
Surviving is a beloved companion, Angie Hurst and a niece, Rebecca wife of Dr. John Gotwalt of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by a son Richard Leiphart II.
A Service remembering Dick’s life will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 3:00 P.M. at the Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, 141 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA. A time of visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 2:00 P.M. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Meals on Wheels, 1085 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601.
