Robert (Bob) C. Kahler of Willow Street passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 9, 2011 after living life to the fullest. Born in Shamokin, PA on September 8, 1937, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Ethel B a s h o r e Kahler. Bob was married to Jean M. Kahler of Willow Street. He graduated from Shamokin High School in 1955 and attended the Ohio State University on a Navy scholarship. During 26 years as a Naval officer, he and his family lived across the country and overseas. He deployed to Vietnam several times including as the Commanding Officer of a minesweeper. Following his Navy retirement in 1987, he worked for Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia and the University of Miami, Miami, Florida. Beyond his enthusiasm for Jean, his interests included travel, shopping, computers, re-connecting with old friends, boating, scuba diving, and fishing. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lancaster. Surviving family includes three sons and their families: Robert B., husband of Carol P.Kahler of Blacksburg, Virginia; Richart C., husband of Kimberly R. Kahler of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Christopher B., husband of Kathy L. Kahler of Norfolk, Virginia; and two grandchildren, Keaton and Ethan. Additional family members include Melissa R. wife of Donald Heinley of Lancaster, and Amy N. wife Robert Walker of Taneytown, Maryland, and four grandchildren. Robert was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosemary. Friends are encouraged to attend a celebratory memorial service at the First United Methodist Church, corner of Duke and Walnut Streets, Lancaster, PA on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 2:00 PM. The family will meet with friends immediately following the memorial service. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Please omit flowers.
