Robert L. Gilbert, 78, of Lancaster, passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at Lancaster General Hospital after a courageous battle with many illnesses. He retired from the Lancaster Post Office as an associate office coordinator with 35 years of service. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy during the Korean War. Bob was the loving husband and friend of Phyllis (Armstrong) Gilbert. They shared 30 years of marriage together. He will be deeply missed by his wife and family.
He was born in Hagers-town, MD, but lived most of his life in Lancaster. He was the son of the late Nevin and Lucille Stottlemeyer Gilbert.
Surviving in addition to his wife are: three children, Robert A. Gilbert of Houston, TX, Jeffrey K. husband of Karolyn Waller of Lancaster, Kelly wife of David Groom of Columbia; one grandson, Nicholas Gilbert of Houston, TX; 4 granddaughters, Mallory Gilbert of Houston, TX, Morgan Bransby of Columbia, Madalyn Waller of Lancaster, Cierra Groom of Columbia; a great-grandson, Trenton Moore of Columbia.
Also surviving are: three brothers, Stan husband of Anette Gilbert of Willow Street, John (Mel) husband of Shirley Gilbert of Millersville, and Kenneth Gilbert of Colorado; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, William (Bill) and N. Ronald Gilbert.
Funeral services will be held from the Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, 141 E. Orange St., Lancaster on Monday, March 28, 2011 at 11 AM with interment following in Conestoga Memorial Park. Friends may call on Monday from 10 to 11 AM at the funeral home.
