Robert L. Singleton

Robert L. Singleton, 92, of Lancaster, died peacefully on January 11, 2015 at the Mennonite Home near his residence at Woodcrest Villas retirement community.  Bob was the son of the late W. Roy and Iva Rhoads Singleton.  He was married to his beloved wife of 49 years, Norma Diffenbach Singleton, who died in 1989.

Bob graduated from Manheim Township High School in 1940 and served in WWII as a gunnery instructor and bombardier, accumulating 24 combat missions in B-17 aircraft in Europe.  After the war Bob and his late brother Edgar became co-owners of Singleton’s Shoes of Lancaster, founded by their father, and Martin’s Store in New Holland.  Bob led an active career dedicated to a growing business, while devoting time to family, friends, and community.  He enjoyed many years of flying as a private pilot and became an avid tennis player in retirement.

A man of high energy, with buoyant faith and cheerful outlook, Bob was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church at Duke and Walnut Streets in Lancaster, and a stalwart member of the Optimist Club of Lancaster.

He is survived by daughter Sandra, and husband Dr. Jackson Lee of Florence, SC;  son Robert, and wife  Scott of Naples, FL and West Stockbridge, MA; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and special friend June Corotto.  He was preceded in death by older brother Wilbur and sister Marian Singleton Medsger, and younger brother Ed.

Private services were held at the family’s request.  In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Optimist International Youth Fund, 4494 Lindell Blvd. St. Louis, MO 63108 or the charity of one’s choice.
