Ruth DeHaven Kauffman, 94, of Oak Leaf Manor, passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at Lancaster Regional Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Richard J. Kauffman to whom she was married to for 49 years.
Born in Lancaster County on January 16, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Alice Messner DeHaven.
Ruth worked as a manager of the photography studio for the former Hager Department Store before moving to Washington, D.C. to supervise studios in Washington, Maryland and Virginia.
She later purchased the studios then owned and operated them until her retirement in 1970.
She returned to Lancaster to be with her family. While in Lancaster, she volunteered for Hospice & Community Care (formerly Hospice of Lancaster County).
She was also a volunteer in Maryland for the Holy Cross Hospital.
She belonged to the Better Photograph Association in Washington, D.C.
Her interests included gardening, puzzles, antiques, shopping and reading.
In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by a son, Gene Kauffman, who took over the photography business after her retirement and previously resided in Baltimore, Maryland. She was also predeceased by brothers Vincent DeHaven and DeVonde DeHaven, and a sister Vinette Beck, all of Lancaster.
She is survived by nieces: Joyce Evans of Lancaster, Phyllis Miller of Mountville, and LaVon Thomas of Akron, Ohio. Also surviving are 4 great-nieces and 2 great-nephews.
