Ruth Mayer Speedy, 94, passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2012, at Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She resided at Willow Valley Retirement Community, Willow Street,
Pennsylvania for the last 25 years.
Ruth was predeceased by husbands Gerald A. Speedy in 2008, and Noel S. Mayer in 1979.
Ruth was born in Fowler, Kansas on December 4, 1917 to Ina and Arthur Waldrop. She graduated from
Emporia, Kansas High School and from Business College in Missouri. After several years of secretarial
work in Kansas City, she married and moved to St. Paul, Minnesota. She served as a County 4H Leader in the Stillwater, Minnesota area and was active in the United Methodist Church there. She attended the
University of Minnesota with her oldest son, Ralph and received a B.S. in Elementary Education in 1965.She taught second grade in the Suburban St. Paul School System, and later substituted in the Albuquerque, New Mexico district when she moved there with her husband, Noel.
She has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster since 1987. She was also a member
of the League of Women Voters and Common Cause.
Ruth will always be remembered as the petite, lovely, sweet woman she was -living life to its fullest until the end.She was, indeed, a special lady in every role she held during her lifetime and will be dearly missed by those who knew her well.
Ruth is survived by her three sons: Ralph S. and his wife Janis; Stephen A. and his wife JoAnne; and
Donald Mayer, all of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two grandsons, Thomas and James Mayer, and great-
grandchildren, Lucy, Mason, Frances and Helen, and a sister Josephine Clark ofHebron. Nebraska. Also
surviving are step sons, Robert Speedy of Lakewood, NJ, and Richard Speedy of Hopewell, N J, and their families.
A memorial service is being planned for early May. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Speedy’s
memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster, 140 E. Orange St., Lancaster, PA
