Ruth Sanders Verwohlt, of Homestead Village, Lancaster, PA, died on August 4, 2011.
Born Ruth Burriss Sanders on August 12, 1916 in Follansbee, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Howard Byron and Mary Burriss Sanders.
Raised in Follansbee, West Virginia, Mt. Pleasant, Ohio & St. Clairsville, Ohio, she was a 1934 graduate of St. Clairsville High School.
She married Harold A. Verwohlt, of St. Clairsville, on August 8, 1939, and they moved to Lancaster in February 1940. Ruth worked in the development office at Franklin & Marshall College, volunteered for PTAs, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Swimming Teams, Red Cross, United Way, Easter Seal, the Visiting Nurses Association, and Linus Project.
Ruth was a member of Iris Club, Kings Daughters, and PEO, and an active member of Bethany Presbyterian Church for 71 years.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents, a sister, Jane Stoeckel, and in June 2007, her spouse of nearly 68 years, Harold A. Verwohlt.
She is survived by daughter, Kay Rath & husband, Joel, of Houston, Texas; daughter, Jane Berry & husband, John, of Harpswell, Maine; and son, Henry (Hank) & wife, Cheri, of Lockport, New York; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Tish Jones; three cousins and nine nieces and nephews and their families.
The family wishes to thank all the staff of Homestead Village for the loving care given to Ruth.
A Memorial Service will be held at Homestead Village, 1800 Village Circle, Lancaster, PA 17603 on Saturday, August 13, at 2:00 P.M. Family will greet friends immediately following the service. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
