Shirley Brown

Shirley Brown, 98, died on August 26, 2013 in Lititz, PA.  Born in Haverhill, MA, she was the daughter of the late Russell W. and Orah (Martin) Bray.  She was married 46 years to Donald H. Brown who died in 1992.

Shirley was raised in Haverhill and was graduated from Haverhill High School in 1932 and Lawrence Memorial Hospital School of Nursing (Medford, MA) in 1936.  She worked as a Registered Nurse at Lawrence Memorial prior to her service from 1944 to 1946 as a Lt. (jg) in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps.

Shirley resided in the Plainville/Kensington, CT. area for 54 years and in Lancaster, PA for 11.  She was a member of the Plainville Congregational Church where she was a member of Church Council, served as Moderator and a Deacon, and managed the Church’s Plainville Thrift Shop.  She was also President of the Church’s Women’s Federation.  A perpetual reader, she was Past President of the Plainville Literary Club.

Shirley was a die-hard fan of the Boston Red Sox and UCONN Women’s Basketball.

Shirley is survived by her daughter Elizabeth E. (Betsey) Brown of Lancaster, PA and her son and daughter-in-law, Russell K. and Cheryl S. Brown of Lakeland, FL.  She was pre-deceased by her brother, Russell M. Bray.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 7:00 pm at the Plainville Congregational Church, 130 W. Main St., Plainville, CT 06062.  There will be a reception after the service.  Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Haverhill, MA, at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, Shirley’s family requests that memorial gifts be made to the “rAise the roof” fund of the Plainville Congregational Church or the Lawrence Memorial-Regis College School of Nursing at 170 Governor’s Ave., Medford, MA 02155, with checks payable to LM/RC Nursing Program.
