Susan E. Lain, 83, died on Friday April 11th, 2025. She was married for 62 years to Wilfred F. Lain, who survives.

Born in Lancaster on January 3, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Margaret (Duke) Kauffman. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster.

Music was Susan’s profession. She studied piano and organ at an early age and was organist of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ during her high school years. After graduating from McCaskey in 1959, she attended Westminster Choir College (Princeton, NJ) where she graduated with an BMus Degree. She was a soloist with the Westminster Choir and sang with the Symphonic Choir which performed and recorded with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Susan served churches director of music and organist in New Jersey, Kansas and Lancaster. A private teacher of piano, organ and voice, she also taught piano for fourteen years at Hinkletown Mennonite School.

Her interest in ancestry became of great importance when she discovered she was related to Johann Adam Hambright, Captain in the Revolutionary War. Susan was accepted into membership of the Donegal Chapter of the DAR. She was also a member of the Lancaster Historical Society.

Also surviving are daughters, Kimberly G. married to Jonathan Shively and their children, Benjamin, Noah and Lydia; Amber S. married to Scott A. Albright and their children, Heather Gast (David) and S. Anthony Albright, two Great-Granddaughters, Aria Rey Gast and Ava Sky Gast. A sister, Phyllis Whitmoyer, Loudon, TN survives as well as a nephew, nieces and many cousins.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Think of Sue as living in the hearts of those she touched throughout her life. “Soli Deo Gloria.”
