Thomas W. Bowers

Thomas W. Bowers, 69, of Lancaster, passed away February 1, 2013 at Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness.  He was the husband of Kay Bowers, with whom he celebrated four years of marriage on December 5.  Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Waldo and Gertrude June Bowers and was predeceased by his first wife, Martha.

A 1964 graduate of Lebanon Valley College where he majored in music education, Tom served as an instrumental music teacher in the Penn Manor School District from 1965-1996.  He was a high school band director, orchestra leader and ended his teaching career as an elementary music instructor.  A stellar trumpeter, he played hundreds of shows with the Tiny Wright Orchestra and with other musical ensembles.  He taught trumpet privately at Wright’s music store in Lancaster.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Thomas W. Bowers, Jr. and his companion, Mary, of Lancaster, daughter Susan L. Bowers, Mountville, granddaughters Robin Greiner and her son, Kamyn, Corinne Greiner, a sister Pat Miller of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Kay’s children, Alanna R. McGarvey and her daughter, Samantha, Kathleen Morales and her husband Ramon, and son, Brendan B. McGarvey.

The family will receive visitors on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Avenue, Lancaster, PA, at 10:00 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial following at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Peter I. Hahn as Celebrant.  Interment in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions in Tom’s memory may be made to St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church at the address above.
