Viola M. Shenk died peacefully on Saturday, April 27

, at Homestead Village, Lancaster, in her ninety-eighth year. Born in East Earl Township, Viola was the daughter of the late S. Irvin Weaver and Elsie (Diller) Weaver. She was a graduate of East Lampeter High School, Class of 1933. Viola was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Shenk, on April 25

th

, 2000, after 64 years of marriage. Charles and Viola were the first cottage residents of Homestead Village, where they were referred to as “the Pioneers.”

Viola,“Vi” as she was known by friends, was a homemaker and also worked at the former Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster. She was a member of St. Andrew United Church of Christ where she was a long-time member of the choir, the women’s organizations and sewing group, served on the church board, and was a Sunday School teacher in early years. She and her husband served “Meals on Wheels”in Lancaster from 1980 to 1992, and they also liked to travel. Viola enjoyed gardening, growing and arranging flowers, quilting, cooking, baking, needlework and ceramics. For many years at their home on Pine Drive, Lancaster, she and Charles hosted a picnic and corn roast for the St. Andrew congregation. The couple also began a tradition of a family summer picnic, which the children have continued to this day.

Surviving are a son, Robert E. (Diane), of Green Valley, AZ; and two daughters, both of Lancaster: Doris, married to Merrell F. Clark; and the Rev. Kay Rader, wife of the Rev. Glenn Rader; also four grandchildren: Dale Shenk (Robin) of Mountville; Jeffrey Clark (Ann), Lancaster; Jennifer Hessinger (Mark), Lancaster; and Dylan Jenkins (Margaret), of Murfreesboro, TN. Viola had ten great grandchildren, and four step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Diane Shenk; a brother, D. Earl Weaver; and a sister, Ruth Weaver Martin.

Friends are invited to join the family in a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Viola on Thursday, May 2

at 11:00 AM in the Glasford Room of Homestead Village, the Revs. Robert Hunsicker and David Longenecker officiating. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday evening, May 1
