Virginia (Ginny) L. Metzger
On Saturday, December 5, 2015, Virginia L. (Eckenrode) Metzger died at Lancaster General Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late John W. Eckenrode and Kathryn Griffitts Eckenrode.
Ginny attended Catholic schools in Lancaster, PA and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy and Lancaster Catholic High School. She attended Dunbarton Junior College, Washington D.C. and was certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
She was a homemaker and was extremely active in the neighborhoods where she lived being especially attuned to the elderly and to the needs of those neighbors who had special needs and challenges.
Ginny was a member of the Iris Club of Lancaster, the Hamilton Club, and the Lancaster Country Club where she was a member of the Nine Hole Women’s Golfers. She was a member of the Daughters of the
American Revolution and an active member of the Ladies Dental Auxiliary of the Lancaster Dental Association having served as president of that organization. She also volunteered as a Gray Lady at St. Joseph’s Hospital and as a tour guide at Wheatland, the home of President James Buchanan.
She was a member of Sacred Heart and St. Leo the Great Catholic Parishes and later worshipped at the chapel at Lancaster Regional Medical Center.
Ginny was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Dr. Jack B. Metzger. She is survived by a daughter, Virginia L. Babic, wife of Michael W. Babic Lancaster, two sons, John W. Metzger, husband of Mary Aierstuck Lancaster, Ronald S. Metzger, husband of Alice Rittenhouse, Willow Street, along with eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A service will be celebrated at DeBord Snyder Funeral Home, 141 East Orange Street, Lancaster PA on Friday, December 11, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. Viewings will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, December 10, 2015, from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. and on Friday, December 11, 2015, from 12:00 noon until the time of the service.
